Yachtsman

Sydney Griffin yachtsman

Welcome to my yachtsman page! The water has always been my sanctuary—a place of adventure, peace, and purpose. Growing up around the Great Lakes in Michigan, I fell in love with sailing and boats as a kid, a passion that’s carried me through over 25 years of marine work with AngelsGate Marine. This page isn’t about selling services, it’s about sharing the story of how I went from building a sailboat at 13 to maintaining yachts, the lessons learned on choppy waters, and my dreams of sailing the California coast. It’s a journey tied to my Finnish roots, faith, and a commitment to keeping the seas open for everyone. Learn more about my full background on the Home page

How I Got Started

My connection to the water began early, growing up in and around Lake Huron, Michigan, where the Great Lakes shaped my childhood. Every summer, I sailed with my uncle on his 18′ Hobie Cat, feeling the thrill of the wind as we skimmed across the waves. At 13, inspired by my grandfather’s carpentry, I built my first sailboat by hand—a small, scrappy vessel that I proudly sailed on a local lake. That same year, in 1972, my family bought a 26′ center console fishing boat for fishing and water-skiing on Lake Huron, surrounded by friends and family with yachts that sparked my curiosity.

That’s when I started my first “business.” At 13, I’d Walk the docks with a bucket and towel, asking boat owners if they needed cleaning or waxing done. Those early gigs taught me hustle and care, polishing hulls and learning the quirks of each vessel. Over time, I moved from cleaning to hands-on maintenance, diving into engine repairs, fiberglass work, and safety inspections. By the late 1990s, I founded AngelsGate Marine in Los Angeles, CA. and in 2025, Yakima, WA, blending my construction-honed precision with a love for boats. My self-taught skills, paired with marine Experiences, let me tackle everything from routine upkeep to complex restorations, always with an eye on safety and quality.

My Current Focus

Today, through AngelsGate Marine, I care for boats and yachts with the same passion I had as a kid on the docks. Whether it’s cleaning, detailing, repairs, or inspections, my work ensures vessels are ready for adventure. My Finnish heritage and faith guide me, emphasizing stewardship of the water and community connection. I also weave in my photography passion, capturing dolphins leaping alongside my sailboat—a reminder of why I love this life.

Here are the core values that shape my approach, refined from years on the water:

  • Integrity and Honesty: I provide clear, upfront assessments for inspections or repairs, building trust with owners.
  • Precision and Craftsmanship: Using tools like marine diagnostics and eco-friendly cleaners, I deliver thorough, high-quality work.
  • Safety and Standards: My inspections ensure vessels meet regulations, keeping owners safe and worry-free.
  • Environmental Care: Eco-friendly products and proper waste disposal protect Yakima’s waters and marine life.
  • Personalized Service: I tailor maintenance plans to each boat’s needs, from seasonal care to urgent fixes.
  • Problem-Solving: From engine malfunctions to hull cracks, I find creative, durable solutions.
  • Community Connection: I share boat care tips through local talks, fostering a love for the water in Yakima.

My work includes safety inspections, engine and plumbing repairs, fiberglass restoration, and eco-friendly cleaning/detailing. Each task reflects my early dockside hustle, now elevated with experience and a commitment to excellence.

Challenges Overcome

The marine world has tested me plenty. Starting at 13 with no formal training, I learned through trial and error—missteps like over-waxing a deck taught me precision fast. Economic ups and downs in the 2000s pushed me to keep AngelsGate Marine lean, relying on creative solutions like bartering services or community partnerships, much like my ministry work. Working in remote marinas with basic tools was another hurdle, but it sharpened my adaptability, much like my FEMA inspection days. Balancing marine work with carpentry and ministry has been a juggle, but faith and time management keep me steady.

Where I’m Going

In the next 10 years, I’m dreaming big: I want to sail the California coastline, maybe even join a group to Hawaii, capturing dolphins and sunsets with my camera along the way. If AngelsGate Marine grows, I’ll train and mentor young people in Yakima to work on yachts professionally, passing on the skills I learned on those Michigan docks. I’m also excited to push for greener practices, like biodegradable cleaners and energy-efficient systems, to protect our waters. My vision is a community of boaters and stewards who share my love for the sea, creating a ripple effect of care and adventure.
